When I talk about layouts, I’m referring to how you place items on a page. The CSS properties that are widely used here include:

  • display — often grid or flex nowadays
  • margin
  • padding
  • width
  • height
  • position
  • top, left, bottom, right

I often include border-width as a minor item in this list as well.

At this point, there’s only one thing I’d like to say.

Tailwind is really great for making layouts.

There are many reasons why.

First: Layout styles are highly dependent on the HTML structure

When we shift layouts into CSS, we lose the mental structure and it takes effort to re-establish them. Imagine the following three-column grid in HTML and CSS:

<div class="grid">
  <div class="grid-item"></div>
  <div class="grid-item"></div>
</div>
.grid {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 2fr 1fr;

  .grid-item:first-child {
    grid-column: span 2
  }

  .grid-item:last-child {
    grid-column: span 1
  }
}
Two blue rectangles side-by-side illustrating a two-column layout where the left column is twice the width of the right column.

Now cover the HTML structure and just read the CSS. As you do that, notice you need to exert effort to imagine the HTML structure that this applies to.

Now imagine the same, but built with Tailwind utilities:

<div class="grid grid-cols-3">
  <div class="col-span-2"></div>
  <div class="col-span-1"></div>
</div>

You might almost begin to see the layout manifest in your eyes without seeing the actual output. It’s pretty clear: A three-column grid, first item spans two columns while the second one spans one column.

But grid-cols-3 and col-span-2 are kinda weird and foreign-looking because we’re trying to parse Tailwind’s method of writing CSS.

Now, watch what happens when we shift the syntax out of the way and use CSS variables to define the layout instead. The layout becomes crystal clear immediately:

<div class="grid-simple [--cols:3]">
  <div class="[--span:2]"> ... </div>
  <div class="[--span:1]"> ... </div>
</div>
Two blue rectangles side-by-side illustrating a two-column layout where the left column is twice the width of the right column.

Same three-column layout.

But it makes the layout much easier to write, read, and visualize. It also has other benefits, but I’ll let you explore its documentation instead of explaining it here.

For now, let’s move on.

Why not use 2fr 1fr?

It makes sense to write 2fr 1fr for a three-column grid, doesn’t it?

.grid {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 2fr 1fr;
}

Unfortunately, it won’t work. This is because fr is calculated based on the available space after subtracting away the grid’s gutters (or gap).

Since 2fr 1fr only contains two columns, the output from 2fr 1fr will be different from a standard three-column grid.

Three examples of multi-column layouts stacked. The first is an equal three-column layout, the second and third are two columns where the left column is double the width of the right column.

Alright. Let’s continue with the reasons that make Tailwind great for building layouts.

Second: No need to name layouts

I think layouts are the hardest things to name. I rarely come up with better names than:

  • Number + Columns, e.g. .two-columns
  • Semantic names, e.g. .content-sidebar

But these names don’t do the layout justice. You can’t really tell what’s going on, even if you see .two-columns, because .two-columns can mean a variety of things:

  • Two equal columns
  • Two columns with 1fr auto
  • Two columns with auto 1fr
  • Two columns that spans total of 7 “columns” and the first object takes up 4 columns while the second takes up 3…

You can already see me tripping up when I try to explain that last one there…

Instead of forcing ourselves to name the layout, we can let the numbers do the talking — then the whole structure becomes very clear.

<div class="grid-simple [--cols:7]">
  <div class="[--span:4]"> ... </div>
  <div class="[--span:3]"> ... </div>
</div>

The variables paint a picture.

Example of a seven-column layout above a two-column layout with equally-sized columns.

Third: Layout requirements can change depending on context

A “two-column” layout might have different properties when used in different contexts. Here’s an example.

Two two-by-two layouts next to each other. In both cases, the third item wraps to the second line, followed by the fourth item.

In this example, you can see that:

  • A larger gap is used between the I and J groups.
  • A smaller gap is used within the I and J groups.

The difference in gap sizes is subtle, but used to show that the items are of separate groups.

Here’s an example where this concept is used in a real project. You can see the difference between the gap used within the newsletter container and the gap used between the newsletter and quote containers.

A two-column layout for a newsletter signup component with the form as the left column that is wider than the width of the right column, containing content.

If this sort of layout is only used in one place, we don’t have to create a modifier class just to change the gap value. We can change it directly.

<div class="grid-simple [--cols:2] gap-8">
  <div class="grid-simple gap-4 [--cols:2]"> ... </div>
  <div class="grid-simple gap-4 [--cols:2]"> ... </div>
</div>

Another common example

Let’s say you have a heading for a marketing section. The heading would look nicer if you are able to vary its max-width so the text isn’t orphaned.

text-balance might work here, but this is often nicer with manual positioning.

Without Tailwind, you might write an inline style for it.

<h2 class="h2" style="max-width: 12em;">
  Your subscription has been confirmed
</h2>

With Tailwind, you can specify the max-width in a more terse way:

<h2 class="h2 max-w-[12em]">
  Your subscription has been confirmed
</h2>
A centered heading in black that says Your subscription has been confirmed.

Fourth: Responsive variants can be created on the fly

“At which breakpoint would you change your layouts?” is another factor you’d want to consider when designing your layouts. I shall term this the responsive factor for this section.

Most likely, similar layouts should have the same responsive factor. In that case, it makes sense to group the layouts together into a named layout.

.two-column {
  @apply grid-simple;
  /* --cols: 1 is the default */

  @media (width >= 800px) {
    --cols:2;
  }
}

However, you may have layouts where you want two-column grids on a mobile and a much larger column count on tablets and desktops. This layout style is commonly used in a site footer component.

Since the footer grid is unique, we can add Tailwind’s responsive variants and change the layout on the fly.

<div class="grid-simple [--cols:2] md:[--cols:5]">
  <!-- span set to 1 by default so there's no need to specify them -->
  <div> ... </div>
  <div> ... </div>
  <div> ... </div>
  <div> ... </div>
  <div> ... </div>
  <div> ... </div>
</div>
Example of a footer that adapts to the screen size. It goes from a two-column layout on small screens to a five-column layout on wider screens.

Again, we get to create a new layout on the fly without creating an additional modifier class — this keeps our CSS clean and focused.

How to best use Tailwind

This article is a sample lesson from my course, Unorthodox Tailwind, where I show you how to use Tailwind and CSS synergistically.

Personally, I think the best way to use Tailwind is not to litter your HTML with Tailwind utilities, but to create utilities that let you create layouts and styles easily.

I cover much more of that in the course if you’re interested to find out more!

What kind of cat owner lets a cat with kittens roam outside to be lost for over a month?

How many times have we sat here and typed out this same sentiment? If you're going to "own" a cat, you need to take responsibility for it. That means keeping it safe, and even if it cries and screams to go outside, you have to teach it to be an indoor cat. Especially if it just had kittens. The big, bad world is no place for a momma cat and her baby kittens to survive in. Not with cars speeding by, hungry predators looking for their next meal, and snowy weather just waiting to do them harm.

Luckily, mom and her babies were rescued by a neighbor who found them in their shed. They took them in, and honestly, they did their due diligence in trying to find the owner. They posted on Facebook, asked the neighbors, called local vets to see if anyone reported a missing cat and kittens, but got no response. So, they did what any compassionate and caring purrson would: they found homes for the kittens and kept the momma cat.

Well, the "original owner" showed up out of the blue and demanded her cat and kittens back. She even threatened to call the police!

Okay, Karen, you go ahead and call the police. We can't wait for them to show up and laugh in your face.

An owner who doesn't care enough to find her fur babies is not a cat owner in our eyes at all. Scroll down to read the rest of the story!

Now, alongside the iconic Thai elephant, the Suphalak, Korat, Siamese, Konja, and Khao Manee cat breeds are a part of Thailand's cultural representation. Each breed has its own mythology, purrsonality, and cute characteristics that we're pawsitively obsessed with.

We've known from the beginning that cats were going to rule the world, and this is the first step to that happening. It may be a small step, but it is still a step. The Thai government has named its 5 indigenous cat breeds as part of Thailand's "national identity". Some of these breeds are rarer than others, like the Suphalak, a chocolate-colored cat with fierce features, and others are more well-known, like the Siamese cat.

Seeing as we love all kinds of cats here at I Can Has Cheezburger, we did some digging and found all the lore your feline-fanatic brain would ever hope for regarding these cute kitties. It's purrfectly fascinating to know that some Suphalak cats were thought to bring good luck, and others disaster. The Korat cats weren't for sale. They were instead given as gifts, especially to newly married couples. The Khao Manee were kept inside the royal palace, thought to bring good luck!

There aren't many people we can geek out about cats with, so this kind of news is purrfect for us. It's not every day you get to learn about rare and unique cat breeds that are now national symbols.

We know where our next trip is going to be, Thailand, here we come!

Acro-cats in meowtion!

Cat lovers are always impressed by their feline's high-flying abilities, but where does this springy energy come from? Do cats have access to an infinite wellspring of grace, power, and athleticism? If you have a Garfield-like feline, lounging in the sunshine and dreaming of their next bowl of kibbles, you may doubt your cat's athletic ability, but inside every cat is an acrobat, itching to be set free.

All you have to do is whip out the laser pointer or the feather on a string, and watch your cat spring into action like a 1980s kung fu master.

One friendly stray cat showed up… and brought four unexpected surprises with her.

One day a very friendly stray cat wandered up to this family's house and decided to stay awhile. She was affectionate and clearly comfortable around people, but no one nearby claimed her. The family planned to take her to the vet just to make sure everything was okay, especially after noticing her belly looked a little round.

The morning of the appointment brought a big surprise. When they went outside to bring her to the car, four tiny newborn kittens were waiting beside her. The stray had quietly given birth overnight. A cozy little den was set up inside the home office so the new family could rest and stay safe.

Over the next few weeks the kittens grew stronger and more playful. Each one got a name: Bowie, Willy, Joey, and Jackie, who was originally called One-Eyed Jack before everyone realized she was actually a girl. Their mother, lovingly named Mama, took great care of them while the hoomans helped along the way.

When the kittens were ready, loving homes were found for each of them. Joey moved in with the narrator's aunt and quickly won over the household, even becoming friends with the family dog. One kitten stayed behind though. Jackie became the family's failed foster and still lives there today as their beloved little princess.

We all have an inner child, and something about cute cats really brings us back there.

Everyone has an inner child. Whether they touch that part of them, feel it, or interact with it is up to the person, but it's there. It's filled with wonders, with colors and shapes that defined our childhood. Filled with memories good and bad, but all veiled by the aura of nostalgia, as if we're wearing rose colored glasses. Nostalgia is like a hypnotic state where everything looks a little better and a little brighter. There are some things that bring about this sense of nostalgia more than others. Maybe it's a familiar smell, like garlic frying in a pan, or a certain laundry detergent. Maybe it's a song that your mother used to sing to you to go to bed. Maybe it's watching Disney movies that remind us of our childhood. And maybe it's about scrolling wholesome cat memes, because something about their early internet aura makes us feel like we're kids again.

Cats have an inner child too, we just never see if (unless you speak cat, of course). It's not always a simple thing to cling to, and some of us have childhoods and memories teeming with confusion, bereft of a sense of belonging, or feelings that we associate with our family that we don't always want to revisit. But that's the beauty of nostalgia; it helps us forget those thing, helps us feel like it's all in the past, like there's this big bubble of time, space, and protection between us and then. So, enjoy these nostalgic cat memes that make us feel like kids again.

It's always a surprise when you adopt a kitten and actually find that they're pregnant!

A woman sees a cat sitting on a fence outside her apartment complex. She says she looks very small, skinny, and ready to be taken in and loved. She immediately acts on this impulse, and adopts the little one. She figures the kitten must be around 4 months old, and when she takes her to the vet she realizes that the kitten is pregnant! She still wants to keep her, and she helps assist the kittens birth to her litter of five. She gets them all vet appointments to be cleaned up, microchipped, and ready for a family. She keeps one, and decides with her man to give the other four away to a good home. She always looks back on that day with wonder and serendipity, knowing that she could have decided to skip work and would never have found this wonderful cat. Read the full description of the story below, and enjoy the wholesome family.

Close your eyes and imagine a place where the sun never sets, but stays at that purrfect angle for a permanent nap.

Welcome to the Promised Land of Purrfection! In this meowgical kingdom, the streets are paved with premium cardboard and the clouds are made of the softest, fluffiest cotton candy. Here, our feline overlords rule with a gentle paw and a loud purr. Every tree is a giant scratching post, and the rivers flow with fresh tuna juice and lactose-free milk.

In this land, there are no alarm clocks - only the soft mlem of a smol kitten waking you up for a snuggle. We spend our days chasing laser dots that we can actually catch and admiring the endless fields of catnip. It's a silly, cozy paradise where zoomies are the national sport and the only law is that you must provide unlimited chin scritches. It's pure, unadulterated bliss.

Having a velcro cat is like living with your own tiny shadow made of love.

We, as cat owners, always warn first-time adopters that cats… don't always show affection in the way that you expect. That doesn't mean that they don't feel it. All that it means is that you have to do some extra work to learn your cat's love language and read it as it is. Some cats will show you affection by turning their back to you when they eat. Some cats will do it by slow-blinking at you from across the room. Other cats will do it by watching TV next to you and copying your sitting position. Little things. But meaningful. A cat's way of showing affection may be funny to an outsider, but that doesn't matter. It is up to you to recognize it and appreciate it.

Of course, some of us win the lottery. Some of us don't have to work hard at all to learn our cat's love language, because we all speak the same one. They tell you that they love you by… cuddling with you, begging for you attention and sitting directly on your face in the middle of the night. Velcro cats are amazing

What we all need right meow is a soft little slice of happiness.

Seriously. We think that a little pure joy could not hurt anyone right now. Logging ono social media right now feels like a gamble - you don't know whether you will get the wholesome cat content that you are looking for or the complete opposite. We want that cat joy served up on a silver platter. We want it handed to us on a soft and fluffy paw. We want some hilarious cat memes right meow, and that is why we work as writers for ICHC.

Writing for this pawsome brand also gives us the opportunity to share all that simple joy - and the many, many cat memes - with all of you guys. Makes us feel kind of nice, knowing that us collecting all these silly cat memes and being able to share them with you guys might make you smile and improve your day a little bit. We have a great time looking for these memes, and you have a good time scrolling through them. It's a win-win. It's like we are able to take our little slice of happieness and share it with all of you. And we think that is pretty cool.

Somewhere out there is a smol cat causing tiny chaos.

Smol cats look like someone accidentally made a regular cat at 50 percent size and just decided to roll with it. Tiny paws. Tiny nose. Tiny little face that somehow still manages to look very serious about whatever it's doing. They wander around the house like they have extremely important responsibilities, even though those responsibilities mostly involve staring at things and being adorable.

A smol cat sitting down turns into a perfect little fluff orb. Just a round puff with ears and eyes. It almost doesn't look real, like someone placed a fuzzy toy on the floor and it suddenly blinked. The amount of fluff compared to the amount of actual cat feels wildly unbalanced.

The confidence is also completely unreasonable. A smol cat will walk straight up to animals five times its size like it's the boss of the whole operation. No hesitation. No second thoughts. Just tiny paws marching forward like they've been running the household for years.

And somehow they always manage to end up in the exact center of everything. Right in the middle of the room. Right in the middle of the hallway. Right where everyone needs to walk. A little puffball planted there like it owns the place. Which, based on the attitude alone, it probably does.

Respect your elders, kittos.

When we tell you to think of a small, European village, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? Probably a tight-knit community, a quiet and cozy main street, a farmer's market with fresh produce, and many slow-walking and slow-living senior citizens. Every small village has its own group of elders who seem to be living there forever, with generations of ancestors who built this place. It's just that sometimes, these elders are not human at all. Sometimes, the village elder is a sweet senior cat, living his best old person life.

One such Italian village gathered to celebrate Filippo, the feline senior citizen - born and raised in the very same small town. But as many cat lovers know, cats should be celebrated worldwide. So one local resident took to the interwebs and shared the wholesome news with the online cat community - Filippo is celebrating his 26th birthday! Which is old. Very, very, very old…

This is exactly like that childhood book Are You My Mother? Except this time it's a horde of baby penguins and one seriously smol stray cat.

Penguins and cats don't really mix. Mostly because the cats probably think, "Oh, birds! This will be a tasty meal!", and then as soon as they get closer and realize how large the penguins are, they immediately realize how wrong they were. The penguins pose no threat to the cats, but cats don't like things they can't control, and a herd of baby penguins is about the least-controllable thing in their environment.

However, it makes for a pawsitively hissterical interaction! Our video below shows a stray cat (they say it's domestic, but we think that by 'domestic' they mean it's a normal house cat breed), introducing itself to a group of a waddle of giant baby penguins, who immediately take interest in the tiny feline and start following it around. The cat, who wasn't seeking all of this unwanted attention, keeps putting distance between itself and the penguins, but they keep following. Maybe they're interested in it, maybe they think it's their meowther, or maybe they just want to play. Who knows!

Regardless of why, this video made our day. It's the purrfect amount of wholesome shenanigans we expect from our feline friends, plus a whole lot of fluffy, giant penguin babies. What more could you ask for?

Many people wait for the weekends and use their entire time off to do some very important tasks.

For example, never leaving their bed is an extremely important task everyone should set time aside for during the weekends. Not only does it give you a chance to rest and gather strength for the upcoming week, but it also allows you to spend some crucial quality time with your purfect fiesty furiends.

Every time the weekend comes along, and our clingy cats refuse to let us leave the bed, we are reminded of the most important fact pet owners often forget–while we have our own lives, a job, friends, and family, our pets' entire lives revolve around us, especially for indoor cats like our own. All they know is their love for you, their pawrent, so whenever you are there with them, they simply want to soak it all up before you leave again. Sure, many cats will run the other way as soon as you give them more attention than what they asked for, but we truly don't know any cats who would willingly skip cuddle time in bed with their loving pawrents.

And, well, if that is not enough to convince you to stay a little longer in bed with them, we don't know what will.

Perhaps, adding an activity to do together could impurrove your time off. You can lie in bed, cuddle with your cats, and scroll through some feline feel-good memes, like the one below. How about that?

Weekends are better with a few extra fuzzy kittens around.

Weekends are a good time to appreciate just how fuzzy kittens can be. A tiny kitten walking into the room already looks like a little cloud with legs. The fluff sticks out in every direction, making the kitten look twice as round as it actually is. Even the smallest kitten somehow manages to look unbelievably soft and completely adorable.

A kitten that fluffy does not need to do much to steal attention. Sitting down turns them into a perfectly round puff of fur with ears. Stretching out makes the fluff spread everywhere. Sometimes they just sit there blinking slowly, looking like the coziest little creature in the house.

Tiny paws, little whiskers, and all that fuzzy fur make every kitten look extra sweet. Some kittens have fluffy cheeks that puff out like they're wearing tiny winter coats. Others have tails that look like soft little feathers behind them.

After a while the kitten curls up and the fluff folds into a tiny round ball. Paws tucked in, nose hidden in the fur, completely relaxed. A super fuzzy kitten like that is the kind of weekend sight that can make anyone smile.

Sometimes the universe drops a tiny kitten right into your path.

A loud little cry coming from a pile of bushes turned into an unexpected kitten rescue. Hidden inside the greenery was a tiny three-month-old kitten calling out as loudly as he could. Once found, it didn't take long to realize this little guy wasn't shy at all. Within an hour he was already rolling around, showing his belly, and happily accepting attention and food like he'd known people his whole life.

At first it seemed pawsible that the mama cat might still be nearby. He looked healthy and well-fed, so the kitten was gently returned to the area where he was found in case she came back for him. But hours later, after returning to check, the situation looked very different. The kitten was still there, hiding inside a drainpipe, crying and now covered in ants. There was still no sign of a mother or any other cats.

That moment made the decision easy. The little guy was brought back home, where he immediately settled in and quickly started bonding with his rescuer. According to the vet, kittens around that age can sometimes be left on their own by their mothers. Still, this particular kitten seems far too friendly and affectionate to be out fending for himself.

For now, he's safe, playful, and clearly enjoying hooman company. The next step is finding the purrfect permanent home for him. Until then, he's getting plenty of care and attention and it's pretty clear he's already making himself right at home.

One lick, two lick, three lick, cat meme!

What's your favorite type of candy? Are you a chocolate fiend, trying to get your hands on a Hershey's or Kiss? Maybe you love caramel, and you go crazy for Milky Ways or Snickers. Maybe you're a Mike and Ike's type, where you just want something in bright, lurid colors and chewy on your palate. But there are some who prefer lollipops. They love to savor the flavors, like to take their time with the things they enjoy, like to feel the sugar rush bit by bit. And cats are kind of like that, too. There's something inherently sweet about cats. They're like little dolls with their big eyes, their tiny pink noses and bustling whiskers bursting from their face. Imagine your little cat just perched on top of a lollipop waiting for you to bite them and eat them up! It's a new love language, just in case you didn't know about it.

These syrupy sweet kitties evoke the same sensations that a purrfectly swirled pile of cotton candy does, with heaps of reds and blues, they're the purrfect thing for a Saturday scroll. What is there to do on the weekend in mere winter? It may be bright outside, but it's still brisk, chilly, and it's much more comforting to stay inside and think of things sweet, tasty, wholesome, and purrfectly cat-like. The soft fur of a cat, the big curious eyes, the playful antics are all associated with sweetness, and that's why I Can Has Cheezburger has put together this sweet list just for you. Enjoy!
